Blanket Flower Seeds - Gaillardia Aristata - Perennial & Pollinator Friendly

Blanket Flower, aka Gaillardia Aristata, is a hardy perennial member of the Aster family, Asteraceae. Native to western North America, including much of British Columbia, it is one of the easiest and most rewarding wildflowers to grow. Plants typically reach 1–3 feet in height and produce an abundance of brilliant yellow flowers with rich red centres from early summer well into autumn. The blooms are exceptionally rich in nectar and pollen, attracting bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial pollinators throughout the growing season. Their long flowering period and vibrant colours make Blanketflower an outstanding addition to flower gardens, native plantings, meadows, and xeriscapes. Once established, the plants are remarkably drought tolerant and resistant to deer, insects, poor soils, and extreme weather, requiring very little care while providing years of spectacular blooms.

Growing Instructions
Blanket Flower seeds may be started indoors a few weeks before the last frost, but they generally perform best when direct sown into the garden in spring or autumn. If starting indoors, sow the seeds in a sterile growing medium; most seed-starting mixes work well, and we use Sunshine Mix (peat moss and perlite). Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged. Sow the seeds on the soil surface or cover them with no more than 1/8 inch (3 mm) of soil, as light improves germination. Place in a warm, bright location until seedlings emerge, which usually occurs within 1–3 weeks. Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, transplant them into larger containers before moving them outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 8°C. Blanket Flower grows best in full sun and well-drained soil, where it will reward you with abundant blooms for many years to come.
