Hairy Manzanita, aka Arctostaphylos Columbiana, is an evergreen shrub in the Heather family, Ericaceae. Native to the Pacific Northwest, it ranges from British Columbia south through Washington and Oregon into northern California, where it thrives in dry, rocky soils and open woodlands. Hardy to at least zone 6, it is prized for its beautiful reddish bark, attractive silvery-green foliage, clusters of delicate white to pale pink urn-shaped flowers, and brilliant red berries that persist well into autumn. The berries are edible with a mildly sweet, mealy flavour and have traditionally been eaten fresh or dried, though they are more commonly appreciated as an ornamental feature and valuable food source for birds and wildlife. Hairy Manzanita is exceptionally drought tolerant once established, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance, water-wise gardens and native plant landscapes.

Growing Instructions
For best results, start Hairy Manzanita seeds outdoors either directly or in pots about 1–2 weeks before the first frost. The soil should be kept moist, but not damp. Seeds require about 90 days of cold stratification to germinate. Sow the seeds 1/8 to 1/4 inch below the soil surface. Once germinated, and the first true leaf has formed, it's time to pot up to a larger container that contains a good quality potting soil if planted in a pot. Transplant to their final location when the nighttime temperatures are consistently 8°C or higher.
