White Vienna Kohlrabi Seeds - Brassica Oleraceae - Large & Delicious

Quantity: 100 Seeds

White Vienna Kohlrabi is a member of the brassica family, Brassicaceae. This traditional yet relatively unknown plant grows as a biennial, but is harvested at the end of its first growing season. All arial parts of this plant are edible and delicous; however, the bulbous stem are the prize of the harvest. These stems can grow quite large, but are tastiest and most tender when grown to 2-3 inches. They can be eaten raw, cooked, or fermented, and offer a superior flavour to the red varieties. Kohlrabi makes an even tastier alternative to cabbage when used in sauerkraut and coleslaw recipes. This crop is a must for any brassica enthusiast.

All seeds are organic and open pollinated.

  • Growing Instructions

Sow indoors a few weeks before last frost and set outside when the freezing temperatures have passed. It's good to sow them in a sterile growing medium; most available seed starting soils should do the job nicely; we use sunshine mix (peat moss and perlite). The soil should be made moist, but not damp. Sow the seeds 1/8 - 1/4 inch below the soil surface. Store in a warm area until tiny sprouts emerge from the soil. The plants can get quite large, so for best results, its good to give them 3 feet of space to grow. Kohlrabi is resilient, and doesn't need much beyond mulch and regular watering. The plant is hardy down to zone 6, so can tolerate frost and snow quite well. It performs best in full sun, but will also yield a decent harvest when grown in partial shade. It likes to grow in just about any type of soil, and doesn’t seem to be particular to PH, but the soil needs to be free draining of water. These plants are flood, disease, and pest resistant.
